A quick diagnostic
Before blaming the author, name the failure mode:

- Mind wandering — eyes on page, thoughts in tomorrow’s meeting.
- Overload — too many new terms; working memory is full.
- Fatigue — late night, low sleep, heavy scrolling beforehand.
- Environment — notifications, open chat, television audio.
Why the loop feels endless
Reading depends on forward momentum. When attention drops, the oculomotor system often regresses — a physical rewind. Each failed pass adds frustration, which further taxes attention. The loop is self-feeding.

- Cut the session to 15–25 minutes with a real break.
- Remove competing inputs (one screen, do-not-disturb).
- Use a pacer: finger, digital highlight, or RSVP mode for dense PDFs.
- After each section, say one sentence aloud about what it claimed.
- If you reread twice, change posture or room before a third attempt.
When the text is the problem
Some writing is under-edited. Skim for structure (headings, topic sentences) first, then read deeply only where the argument lives. Permission to skim is a focus skill, not cheating.
The goal is not monastic purity. It is finishing the next meaningful unit without the shame spiral.
