Pass 1 — Map the territory
Read title, abstract, section headings, figures/tables, and conclusion. Write one sentence: “This paper tries to answer ___.” If that sentence is impossible, the paper may be wrong for your purpose — stop early.

Pass 2 — Read for your question
Enter only the sections that bear on your question. Skip related-work rabbit holes unless citation hunting is the job. Take notes as questions, not quotations.
Pass 3 — Verify and steelman
Check methods, limitations, and whether figures actually support the abstract’s swagger. This is where skepticism earns its keep.

After the paper
File a 5-line summary and schedule a spaced revisit if the paper feeds an exam, thesis, or work decision. Reading without a landing place is how PDFs become graveyards.
