The shame spiral (and how to step off it)
Exam season arrives. You make an ambitious timetable. You miss Monday. The timetable becomes evidence of failure. You avoid opening the book because opening the book opens the verdict.
This guide assumes that pattern is familiar — and that you are allowed to restart without earning it. Revision is a engineering problem: inputs, intervals, retrieval. Not a moral audition.
Build a timetable that survives ADHD
Generic timetables fail because they are vague and unforgiving. Yours needs:
- Task-level specificity: “Organic chem: mechanisms brain dump, 20 min” — not “study science.”
- Sprint lengths of 15–25 minutes with scheduled breaks.
- Buffer blocks labelled “catch-up / low energy” — use them before panic.
- One priority per day if everything feels urgent.
- Sleep and meals as fixed events — non-negotiable infrastructure.
For a fuller template, see our revision timetable for exam season — then cut it in half. A timetable you follow at 60% beats one you abandon at day two.
Revision methods that respect your brain
Active recall first. Closed-book brain dumps and practice questions. Rereading is seductive and weak.
Spaced intervals. Review at 1, 3, 7 days — calendar-driven, not mood-driven.
Interleaving. Mix subjects within a session to match exam papers and prevent hyperfocus tunnels.
Practice tests under time. Anxiety is partly unfamiliarity. Simulate the room early.
Try RevuSpaced revision without the mental load
Revu schedules review sessions with reminders and tags — so exam prep continues when executive function is low.

- List topics by exam weight and current weakness.
- Cut low-yield perfectionism — know enough to score, not to teach.
- Replace rereading with retrieval for remaining days.
- Ask for extensions or accommodations if eligible — logistics matter.
Exam week: protect the machine
| Do | Avoid |
|---|---|
| Light retrieval, early night | All-nighter “just in case” |
| Pack bag night before | New revision method panic |
| Protein breakfast, water | Excess caffeine spiral |
| Arrive with buffer time | Shame-scroll before entry |
Exams measure recall under pressure. Train recall under mild pressure — not self-contempt under isolation.
